THE LITERARY CIRCLE LONDON
CONSTITUTION
1. Name
The name of the organisation shall be The Literary Circle – London and it shall be referred to as TLC. It shall be exclusively governed by this constitution. The Literary Circle London was founded in 2010 and it is a London based not for profit company.
2. Aims
Our aim is to promote literature, poetry, music, art, theatre, dance, and other forms of diverse cultural activity in England and we intend to:
organise activities that promote classic literature, poetry, music, art, and other forms of diverse literary and cultural activity in England, specifically London We wanted to be inclusive of all art forms, so dance is also included with poetry, music, and theatre in its classic form such as Kathak.
to promote not only the poetry or music but also knowledge about the main figures who wrote the classics, and the singers who sang the classics, to the younger generations in England who are lacking knowledge and information about them.
emphasise the importance of books. Most of us are now focused on social media and books are going out of fashion. As book lovers we promote writers and hold book launches too. The Literary Circle has already promoted two books and held book launches for them in the year 2023
3. Objectives
We shall do this by:
Holding lectures and seminars
Organising poetry events such as Mushairas
Holding musical events such as Raag, Thumri, and Ghazal mehfils
Organise book launches
Arrange theatre plays
Include dance performances
4. Rules
All members to ensure that their individual or collective conduct whilst attending the TLC events or representing the TLC is not detrimental to the interests of TLC or to the interests of fellow members.
b) Punctuality at the events is imperative. The gates to the venue will be closed at the commencement of the event and no entrants will be allowed once the gates have closed. However, where extenuating circumstances exist the entrants could be allowed entry after the event has begun.
Members to ensure and accord due respect and courtesy towards performing artists, both national and international.
Members to ensure absolute confidentiality in terms of the events, the arrangements at these events and to ensure non-disclosure of venues and dates to non-members.
5. Membership
(a) Free membership of the TLC shall be open to any person who is interested in helping the TLC to achieve its aims and willing to abide by the rules of the TLC.
(b) The Executive Committee shall have the power to refuse membership to an applicant, where it is considered such membership would be detrimental to the aims, purposes or activities of the TLC.
(d) Registration and termination of membership.
* Any member of the TLC may resign his/her membership by giving to the secretary of the TLC written notice to that effect.
* The Executive Committee may, by resolution passed at a meeting thereof, terminate or suspend the membership of any member, if in its opinion his/her conduct is prejudicial to the interests and objects of the TLC, PROVIDED THAT the individual member or representative of the member TLC (as the case may be) shall have the right to be heard by the Executive Committee before the final decision is made. There shall be a right of appeal to an independent arbitrator appointed by mutual agreement.
* TLC aims to have no more than 100 members and will close membership as soon as this number has been reached. In the interest of equality, TLC aims to recruit 50 men and 50 women as members.
(f) TLC reserves the right to increase or decrease this number in the future.
6. Membership Fee
Membership will be free to all those who agree with our aims and objectives and are willing to abide by the rules of this constitution.
There will be an entrance charge at each event which will cover food and refreshments and the cost of artists and other expenses.
7. Members’ Guests
TLC Events will be open to members only but members will be able to bring their guests to events providing the guests agree with and support the aims and objectives of the TLC and pay the relevant entrance fee at each event.
8. Executive Committee
(a) TLC shall be administered by an Executive Committee of three (3) people.
(b) The officers of the Executive Committee shall be:
- The Chairperson (Paul)
- The Treasurer (Pernia)
- The Secretary (Huma)
(c) The Executive Committee shall meet at least four times a year.
(d) At least two (2) Executive Committee members must be present for the Executive Committee meeting to take place.
9. Finances
Any money obtained by the TLC shall be used by the TLC only to further the aims of the TLC
Any bank accounts opened for the TLC shall be in the name of the TLC.
Any cheque issued shall be signed by at least one of any two nominated signatories.
The Executive Committee will ensure that the TLC stays within the budget.
11. Alteration of the Constitution
(a) Proposals for amendments to this constitution or dissolution (see Clause 12) must be delivered to the secretary in writing. The secretary in conjunction with all other officers shall then decide on the date of a meeting to discuss such proposals, giving at least four weeks (28 days) clear notice.
(b) Any changes to this constitution must be agreed by at least two thirds of those members present and voting at any general meeting.
12. Dissolution
The TLC may be wound up at any time if agreed by two thirds of those members present and voting at any general meeting. Any assets shall be returned to their providers, if they require it, or shall be passed to another Club with similar aims.
